On The Agenda

Dear Friends and Supporters,

visit to the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan

March 15th marked 2 years since the beginning of the violence in Syria. In the last few months, the National Security team at the Reut Institute has been working on and analyzing the repercussions of the events in Syria on the region and on Israel specifically. The team recently visited the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan in order to learn firsthand about the inherent threats and opportunities for Israel in the new reality that is taking shape in the region.

Tsfat wins the National Educational Award

Tsfat's school system was awarded the National Education Award. This follows a series of national and regional prizes awarded to Tsfat schools in recent years including a regional prize to its education system. Gideon Saar, Israel's Education Minister, called Tsfat's mayor, Ilan Shochat, to personally inform him and congratulate him on this accomplishment.

According to Shochat, Tsfat is in the midst of an ongoing process to 'leapfrog' the city in partnership with Reut, and with education as its top priority. This included restructuring the education system, and recruiting education teams. Results quickly followed.

The panel awarded the city for a number of different reasons such as Tsfat prioritizing education above all other city needs and promoting excellence through tourism development and new faculties. Shochat's team theerefore implemented an operational action plan aimed at realizing the vision to leapfrog the city, valuing diversity, and striving for student excellence and the fulfillment of their potential. Additionally, Shochat sought to promote excellence through two main engines: the Faculty of Medicine and the Environment and tourism development around the ethos of Jewish spirituality and the Old City as an example of an internationally recognized heritage asset. Within the educational frameworks Faculties promote excellence through scholarship programs and programs for outstanding students.

Shochat ended his acceptance speech by thanking faculty, staff, and the panel of judges, and commenting that there is much work ahead.

Obama and 3D Printing

In his State of the Union address, Barak Obama spoke about the self-manufacturing revolution and 3d printing as this generation’s technological revolution and called for the creation of a system of institutions to research the subject. At Reut, we are continuing to actively pursue and promote the creation of a system of communal technological spaces while simultaneously laying the groundwork to open additional locations in various places around the country. In the coming months, we expect to open XLN Haifa and XLN Bat Yam.

We are very excited to announce that we have finalized the first step of our competition for designs of technological products that will serve individuals with special needs and disabilities. Soon, we will start printing and judging the products.

During the upcoming Pesach holiday, the XLN network led by the XLN Haifa team is showcasing our work in a unique demonstration as part of the Pesach festivities at the Madatech in Haifa. All are invited!

In recent weeks, the Reut Institute said goodbye to three staff members.

Noa Ecker-Amrani worked at Reut as part of the ISRAEL15 team and focused on the socio-economic leapfrogging and development of the geographic periphery of Israel.

Additionally, we said good bye to Anat Horowitz-Harel who was a crucial part of our
