Dear Friends and Supporters,

New Publication: Science and Technological Innovation in Israel – A Guiding Government Hand is Needed

This week, the Reut Institute published a new paper on Science and Technological Innovation in Israel. This paper is the culmination of over a year and a half of research that began after we received a specific request from Israel’s defense establishment. The main insight of the paper is that in the past Israel has managed to develop and leap forward in areas which the government has set clear goals for the market and where the government has provided incentive and helped to create the institutional and regulatory base that allowed for these developments. While examining international and domestic trends, it is apparent that today Israel is at a crossroads. The "Start-up nation" model has peaked. Now, the government of Israel must take pro-active steps to equip the Israeli markets to adapt to a new model of innovation that will allow for continued growth. The paper lays out the main points and a series of recommendations that can serve as a guide for the creation of a new model. For the full paper, please see the link (in Hebrew).

The Finals of the 3D Printing Design Competition

This past Thursday, we held an event at the Peres Center for Peace in which we celebrated the finals of the 3D printing design competition and raised a toast to the New Year. The finalists presented their products and received cash prizes of $5,000 (generously donated by Joel Moskowitz). First place was awarded to Moshe Boruchin, a 31 year old Masters student of Industrial Design at the Technion. Moshe designed a mold for tools and silverware that can be customized to each individual hand, geared towards individuals who do not have full motor function in their hands. Second place was awarded to Aya and Noam Efron, siblings ages 15 and 12 from Kfar Hess who designed ‘Egooladim’; custom-designed eyeglasses for children. The event also included the launch of the Reut Institute’s new partnership with Stratasys (formerly Objet), the global leader in 3D printing (and an Israeli company). Roy Keidar, the CEO of the Reut Institute and the leader of the XLN initiative said, “At the cusp of a new year, there is nothing greater than seeing people from all walks of life learning to plan, design, and create products for people with special needs using cutting edge technologies. These technologies are just getting started and Israel has the ability to be a global leader in this field”.

Reut Team Updates: Eran Shayshon, Talia Gorodess and Two New Babies!

We are pleased to announce that 2 new babies have recently joined our Reut family. Last week Ayala Vlodavsky, a member of our Tsfat team gave birth to her first child, a beautiful girl.

Last week we said goodbye to Eran Shayshon who was one of the first team members at the Reut Institute. Eran led the National Security team and Foreign Affairs team as well as Reut’s de-legitimization efforts. Eran will soon begin a new position at APCO Worldwide, a global strategy firm. Additionally, this week Eran became a father for the second time! We wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavors.

Sybil Ottenstein, who previously was an intern at Reut, has rejoined us on the staff as a member of the National Security and Foreign Affairs team.

We have always known how talented and successful our team members are, but this week the rest of the country discovered our secret. Reut team member, Talia Gorodess and her husband Koby Windzberg won the Race to the Million (Israel’s version of the Amazing Race). Talia and Koby, who got married last year, came to the show equipped with the courage, resourcefulness and intellect that brought them great success. We are so proud of you!
