Haile turned to us for help after his contractor, Zhu - a migrant worker – didn't pay him his salary for June. The KLO volunteer who met him thought that Haile seemed very emotional and vulnerable. Haile's brother, sister and 9 year old nephew are being held in Libya. He explained that he needs to pay the ransom for their release and was relying on this salary. When he was held in the refugee detention center in Holot, the direness of his financial needs pushed him to escape and find employment just to help his family. We reached out to the company that hired Zhu himself, as he is not a registered company. Unfortunately, they refused to cooperate. We escorted Haile to the worksite to try to get more information and went with him to file a complaint with the police. Finally, we have secured enough information to file a lawsuit in court. We have also informed HIAS of Haile's story, and they have agreed to appeal to the Ministry of Interior for an exemption from Holot as long as his family is at risk in Libya.
