July 2017
A Word of Welcome from the New Director

Dear friends and supporters,
It’s a privilege to introduce myself as the new director of Kav LaOved. I’m a feminist and a social-political activist. For over a decade, I’ve been a professional in the Israeli NGO-sector, engaged with both peace process issues and workforce integration matters for vulnerable groups in society. As a senior manager, board member and CEO of several civil society organizations, I have advocated for social change and human rights within Israel (incl. Be-Atzmi, Zochrot, Social TV). I believe that Kav LaOved is an extraordinary organization, which holds a unique role in the protection of the rights of workers from the most underprivileged and vulnerable communities in Israel. I am honored to be leading Kav LaOved in its ongoing and new challenges in the future!

How Israel Regulates Migrant Caregivers’ Love Lives
Each week in our office, we see women caregivers telling a similar story. After paying astronomical brokerage fees to come to Israel for work, they arrive facing an alienating employment situation. They leave their families behind, to take care of Israeli families: our elderly and disabled citizens. In the few spare hours they have, they form romantic relationships with other migrant workers. However, when the Ministry of Interior finds out, they are demanded to leave the state as they are on a strict work visa. They take care of our loved ones, but are denied their own.

"Kav LaOved" – Worker's Hotline is advocating to change the Ministry of Interior's policy on the legal front and protect the migrant caregivers' rights.

Help us show workers they are not alone in their fight for just employment! Every donation to Kav LaOved helps to assist workers in standing up for their rights. Any donation of at least 300 NIS (approx. $85.00 USD) will be matched by one of our funding partners.

Tom* has been a caregiver in Israel for seven years now. His daughter in the Philippines became engaged, and Tom decided to return home to join in the preparations. But what would normally be a happy occasion has instead only brought difficulty to Tom and his family. Israeli law says that if an employed migrant worker returns home on a visit, they must seek their employer's permission or else they cannot go. Tom's employer would not give permission. Tom's only other option was to quit his job just for a single visit to be with his family in this special time. Determined to find a solution and not lose his job, Tom contacted us. We helped him by acting as mediator with his employer and things will end well: they reached an agreement and Tom will see his daughter in September!
