Construction Accidents Continue - and Safety Offenders are Punished Less Severely

Since Haim Katz has been appointed Minister of Labor, we have mainly seen promises, and very little action to eradicate the accidents plaguing construction sites. Despite their big promises, it appears the Ministry of Labor has found a way to ease the punishment for safety offenses: contractors that are first time safety offenders will not be fined at all, and will only be warned. The fines imposed on contractors in general will in many cases be 25%-40% lower than the law mandates.

"The problem with these reduction rules is their very existence. There is no reason to be treated more easily for it being the first time you're caught endangering the lives of your workers, just as we wouldn't expect an easement on traffic fines just because it's the first time you're caught drunk driving", says Gadeer Nicola, attorney at Kav LaOved. Help us show workers they are not alone in their fight for just employment! A monthly donation to Kav LaOved will assist workers in standing up for their rights. Any donation of at least 300 NIS over the course of the year (approx. $85.00 USD total) will be matched by one of our funding partners.

___________-...
Mohamed Kayed Hussein was the 23rd out of 28 construction workers (to date) to be killed in construction accidents since the beginning of 2017. On Wednesday, the 23rd of August, Mohamed fell from the third floor in the construction site he worked. He was only 27 years old, and a Palestinian resident of the village of Biddya. He left behind a year old baby, a young widow in the late stages of pregnancy, and parents and siblings which mourned their beloved.

In the Hebrew "Haaretz" article, his tragic death has been written about in detail. "The love of the construction workers has ended, since they aren't Jewish. Nearly nobody is prosecuted for their deaths, which almost always is a result of employer negligence, which also is a result of the workers' ethnicity. This grief has no flags and no memorial posters - Hussein wasn't a martyr nor a hero. Even still, in his town everybody knew he was killed, and its residents knew to point us to his house this week."

May he rest in peace.
