Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We take the pleasure of publishing our monthly newsletter with updates and business news from Israel.

Our office is happy to share that a third team member has recently joined us bringing along experience and knowledge, which will surely contribute to our work with the many initiatives and activities aimed at strengthening Australia – Israel bilateral relations.

Kelly Stuart, holds a Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Communications majoring in Social and Political Science. Kelly has professional experience in family law as well as a keen interest in trade relations and innovative technology.

There are many common hardships both countries are facing as well as many other countries and nations worldwide. The struggle against Covid-19 is certainly most imminent and immediate, particularly in Australia with New South Wales as well as Victoria and large parts Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory are under different stages of lockdown.

Israel, with its very advanced vaccine roll-out campaign is also struggling with rising cases of infections and have launched its 'booster' third jab vaccination per individual initiative the past week, and is considering a State lockdown during the upcoming Jewish holidays in September.

While fighting this pandemic is an immediate challenge, the impact of global warming and subsequently climate change, which is increasingly escalating, evident through unprecedented heatwaves in the Mediterranean Sea, massive bush fires, and mudslides in Europe, all demonstrate the danger our world is already facing.

In this newsletter we will refer to both issues, which countries and nations are facing, that take a toll on our economies and societies as well as the growing cooperation and knowledge sharing, which increases the chance to overcome the pandemic and, equally so, to fight the effects and the deterioration of the environment through integrating alternative energy solutions with advanced technologies.

We wish you all an interesting read and a safe weekend at home!

Rochelle Ives of this Trade Commission explores in her article "Israeli Technology Advancements To Combat Global Climate Change"  how Israel's tech companies are ahead of the game in addressing this issue with science and innovation.

Spotlight on: Covid situation in Israel & Australia
The reality here in Australia is that the incidences of Covid-19 particularly in the states of NSW and Victoria is on the rise and due to the virulence of the Delta strain, harsh lockdown policies have been imposed. NSW is currently under a stay at home order until at least the end of August with many other Australian states experiencing  multiple snap lockdowns. Currently, the fully Covid vaccinated population of Australia only stands at approximately 15% and it is predicted that lockdown policies will continue to be imposed until this percentage is much higher.

Whilst Israel's fully vaccinated populous is much higher at approximately 60%, the Delta variant currently circulating in the community could likely lead to a reintroduction of lockdown measures. With this Covid variant rampant in the community, Israel has become the first nation to officially launch a booster shot of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. Research shows that this third dose is necessary in fighting the onslaught of Covid cases and it is already being issued to people aged over 60 in Israel. In an official announcement made in the last week, General Professor Nachman Ash, Director of Israel's Ministry of Health, urged eligible people to take up the booster shot.

In Australia, it is highly likely that booster shots will also be administered, although the format for this booster program remains unconfirmed. Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently announced that 85 million doses of Pfizer have been ordered for booster shots and that a significant proportion of these should arrive in 2022.
