Israel - Australia Newsletter

June 2022

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

A beginning of a new month signifies the publication of our new monthly newsletter, which we are proud to share.

After more than two and a half years, we were pleased to have the first Australian business mission to visit Israel last week, attending the 2022 Israel Cyber Week Conference in Tel Aviv.

The Cyber mission was a joint partnership between the Trade Commission and the Trans-Tasman Business Circle, with which we prepared a comprehensive professional agenda and program that included a visit to the international conference, business seminar and dedicated meetings with the Israeli cyber industry.

As this was the first delegation since 2019 to visit Israel, we are getting back on track to have more outgoing (as well as incoming) business groups in other sectors visiting our respective markets to continue forging partnerships and creating valuable business connections.

In addition to focusing on cyber security, we have decided to feature other content reflecting commercial and technological opportunities in space exploration and healthcare technologies.

Later this year, Israel will hold another general election after the government formed only a little longer than a year ago has lost its majority and dissolved due to political pressures and internal disagreements.

We invite you to read and enjoy this publication and engage with us at the Trade Commission to harness the opportunities on offer from partnering with Israeli technology companies.

We wish everyone a pleasant weekend ahead.

Israel Cyber Week Delegation

Trojan
For Israel Cyber Week (June 27th – 30th 2022) The Israel Trade and Economic Commission in Sydney led by esteemed cyber security professional Alistair MacGibbon and accompanied by the Trade Commission’s Senior Trade Officer, Jeremy Ungar, brought a business delegation of 18 people to Tel Aviv. The event was a gathering of more than 9,000 attendees from more than 80 countries, and showcased the latest tech in the rapidly-changing world of cyber security.

The delegation, co-hosted by the
Trans-Tasman Business Circle, hit the ground running - kickstarting their week in Israel at the Peres Centre for Peace and Innovation; experiencing artificial intelligence holograms, virtual reality tools, and learning about former President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres’ legacy to bridge the gap between Israelis and Palestinians.

Naftali Bennett was interviewed on stage by Microsoft Israel’s CEO Michal Braverman-Blumenstyk, for his last official engagement as Prime Minister, while moments earlier, the Australian and New Zealand Delegation to Israel Cyber Week was lauded as the first-ever in-person delegation from the region.

Mike Rodgers, former NSA Director, and the Australian Ambassador to Israel Paul Griffiths addressed the delegation and the delegation leader, Alistair MacGibbon, CSO at CyberCX, joined an illustrious panel, where they expounded their thoughts on the global cyber security world in 2030. The panel and former Prime Minister Bennett spoke about geo-political issues, including the Iranian threat and the Russian-Ukrainian war, through the lens of state-based threat actors attacking critical infrastructure and sovereign entities.

At the opening conference, the Australian delegation heard from two leading cyber security companies – one lead by the former Unit 8200 Commander, Israel’s Army intelligence corps, and the other from a CEO rubbing shoulders with the Ministry of Defence. This was followed by “speed-dating" meetings with six of Israel’s top cyber-security companies to discuss their solutions and implementation in Australia. The Australian-New Zealand delegation consisted of the CISO from Energy Australia and the Group CISO from Wesfarmers, numerous board members, Superannuation consultants, MSSPs, innovation hub directors, Banking professionals in digital technologies, and consultants alike.

The Israel Trade and Economic Commission's Jeremy Ungar - responsible for cyber security - commented: “A small and dynamic group of cyber professionals became instant friends and gained a wealth of knowledge that supersedes Zoom meetings and introductions”. Decadent dinners aside, the value achieved with the Australian-New Zealand outbound delegation to Israel for Cyber Week is already tangible, and sign-ups for the next Israel Cyber Week delegation has already started.
