“XR for the People” Symposium at Reichman University
In June, the symposium “XR for the people” was held at Reichman University – a unique and innovative conference led by Prof. Doron Friedman, head of the Advanced Reality Lab at the School of Communications, who said: “I am willing to bet that in 20 years we will look back and try to understand how our world turned completely upside down.”
The conference covered developments in the fields of VR, AR and the “metaverse,” with an emphasis on the human factor, and included several lectures and demonstrations. It opened with a unique demo by Australian philosopher David Chalmers, VR researchers Mel Slater from Barcelona and Prof. Doron Friedman, head of the Advanced Reality Lab at Reichman University’s School of Communications – and Albert Einstein; they all met in a virtual world to discuss Chalmers’s new book, Reality +, which addresses philosophical questions arising from virtual worlds. Among other things, Chalmers maintains that there is no fundamental difference between “reality” and “virtual reality,” and that even if people spend most of their time in virtual reality in the future, they can still have meaningful lives.

Reichman University setting up VC fund for its graduates
Reichman University in Herzliya is setting up a venture capital fund that will invest mostly in startups founded by its graduates. The fund already has $30 million in commitments from investors which are to be allocated to pre-Seed and Seed investments in startups founded by students, even during their studies.
Investors in the new fund include VC fund Pitango and the innovation and investment arm of the Schestowitz Group.
The university will not be investing money in the fund, but will serve as a General Partner (GP) and receive 2% in commission fees and a 20% success fee as is accustomed in the VC world. With the university being a non-profit organization, the profits from the fund will be placed in an endowment fund being set up by the university in a model similar to that of many rich universities in the U.S. who manage billions of dollars in funds.

For 20 years, the EMET Prize, known as the “Israeli Nobel Prize,” has been awarded for excellence in academic and professional achievements that have made a significant contribution to Israeli society. The award ceremony was held last month in the presence of then-prime minister Naftali Bennett, who presented the prize to the 2022 laureates, who received the award in three categories: social sciences, life sciences and the humanities.
“The prize is a sign of a long career and a journey that I began as a student at the Hebrew University,” says Prof. Rubinstein, professor of law and senior faculty member of the Harry Radzyner School of Law at Reichman University, who was awarded the EMET Prize for his contributions in the field of social sciences. “After my university studies, I continued to the Knesset, where I was a member for 25 years and served in various positions as a minister in the government for 20 years,” he says.

RRIS Student of the Month: Hannah Sabbagh
"Hi! My name is Hannah Sabbagh, I'm 19 years old and a first year Psychology student at RU. I was born and raised in Guatemala City. After finishing high school I decided to take a gap year in Israel as a way to connect with young Jewish people from around the world. Throughout my time here I knew Israel was the place I wanted to be in. I am very happy about taking the step to study at Reichman University. The student life, amazing people, interesting classes, diverse opportunities and the positive environment that surrounds us makes me very excited to be here and for what is to come in the next years."
