Festival of Rights
image
Happy Festival of Rights! This Hanukkah is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was signed on December 10, 1948. To mark this special occasion, every night BINA will shed light on a different right - with insights and questions to ignite discussion. On the first night we highlighted Article 1 of the Declaration: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights...”

DID YOU KNOW? This article draws inspiration from Genesis 1:27 “God created human in God’s image, in the image of God he created them; male and female God created them”. And so does Article 1 of Israel’s Basic Law on Human Dignity and Liberty which says “Fundamental human rights in Israel are founded upon recognition of the value of the human being, the sanctity of human life, and the principle that all persons are free”. Notice how Israel’s Basic Law and the Universal Declaration both draw inspiration from Jewish sources and values but neither refer directly to God or Creation.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Does it matter whether one believes that human beings and equality come from God/Creation or from Nature?

Happy Hanukkah!

Meet Zoe Edelman Director of Admissions, BINA International Department
Zoe Edelman grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. After finishing high school she took a gap year in Israel where she lived in Jerusalem, Bat Yam, and Arad. She then went on to study environment and business at the University of Leeds.
After gaining experience in the world of Jewish education in the UK, she made Aliyah (eight months ago!) and began working at BINA as Director of Admissions for BINA’s International Department. Zoe says that BINA’s combination of Jewish learning and social action is a good fit with her background - she grew up in a pluralistic youth movement and has always been interested in the Jewish world and Jewish learning. She enjoys working at BINA and feels she’s in an environment where everyone is passionate and cares about what they do. Outside of BINA, Zoe enjoys Asian cuisine, learning Hebrew, and has just completed the 10k Tel Aviv night run!
